Types of Locks

Locks are one of the oldest forms of security. Types of locks have grown in sophistication over the years, from deadbolt and combination to electronic and high security. Today’s locks are significantly more secure than in the past, and there are several different kinds on the open market. With so much to protect, choosing the one that works best for your residence or business is critical.

Common Types of Commercial Locks

All businesses are different, and thus comes the need for variety in security solutions. There are commercial locks for every type of business that can be tailored to your specific needs.

Cylinder Deadbolt Locks

As one of the most popular types of locks, deadbolts are widely used for residential properties. They are unlocked by turning a knob or key without the use of a spring. The deadbolt design features an intricate locking mechanism that reduces the risk of forced entry by creating a secure lock system. This system makes it almost impossible for an unauthorized person to break in through the door.

One of the more powerful types of locks, mortise locks are commonly used for commercial, entry glass, and apartment doors. It generally consists of complex hardware mounted in the door that is held in place by a set screw. Mortise locks utilize a cam to activate the locking hardware.

Sometimes referred to as maglocks, magnetic locks use magnets and electricity to remain locked. Like electric strikes, magnetic locks require a separate device to trigger unlocking. When activated, it loses its magnetic charge, which causes the door to unlock.

Electronic Locks

Electronic locks utilize a keypad or card system that requires a unique code or keycard instead of a key to lock and unlock. These keyless locks are most common in hotel rooms and offices. However, they are becoming increasingly popular for apartment and office buildings and residential properties.

Electronic locks record how often they are used and can log the time of entry and departure to a room or property. If each resident/employee has a different keycard, it can record which person accessed the lock to make it easier to find out who entered the premises at what time. This feature helps maintain better security practices and can be helpful if suspicious activity is reported.

Grading of Locks

Commercial lock grades are industry standards that guarantee the quality and specification of commercial locks. Lock grades assist developers, contractors, locksmiths, owners, and operators in choosing the best hardware for their business/building. These commercial grades are determined by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA). The BHMA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to enforce these lock grades.

Commercial locks are graded on a scale of 1 to 3, with Grade 1 being the best. These grades are based on:

  • Function
  • Application
  • Security
  • Durability
  • Cycles (how often the lock can be used before it needs to be replaced)
  • Material
  • Finish

Choosing the Right Types of Locks

Once you know the different types of commercial locks, you must choose the best one for your business or residence. An easy tip to remember is to look closely at the packaging of the door lock components. Superior locks often have more professional and higher-quality packaging.

Additionally, as previously said, Grade 1 is the highest grade a commercial lock can receive. Locks with this grade are the most robust and secure for high-traffic areas and places of sensitivity. They are often used in museums, clinics, universities, etc. With their strong, durable construction, Grade 1 locks should hold up to intense use and last longer than their residential counterparts.
